Cashmore Family
« on: March 01, 2011, 10:28 AM »
I am looking for information about my Mother-in-law (Bernadette Farish nee Cashmore)'s father

William Cashmore. He was a printer. He and his wife Mary were married in Ashton in 1929.
The family lived in Ashton - there were 3 daughters - Josephine, Bernadette and Moira.

William was an orphan and we have very little knowledge of his origins.

My mother-in-law is quite unwell and it woule be thrilling for her if anyone does have any information

I have to go out very soon, but have found your William boarding with a family on Wesley Street in Liverpool in 1911.  He says he was born in Liverpool and is 15 years old - occupation Printer.

I can send you a copy of the image.

I found a family on the 1901 census but the date of birth was different than the 1911. So I checked on Free B M D and there was one coming up for Toxteth Liverpool 1901 which is the right area.
So I looked to see what I could find on 1901 census
This was the only family I could find
William Cashmore b 1879 Liverpool Head
Ada Cashemere b 1883 Liverpool  Wife
Child
William Cashmore b 1901 1 month old
Mother of Head
Ellen Cashmore b 1854 Ireland
Joseph Cashmore b1886 Liverpool Brother of Head

This could be yours and he had to say he was older to get a job Fudge

Bit worried about the ages Fudge,  I find it quite hard, but not completely impossible, that a ten year old could be a printer in 1911 and passing himself off as a fifteen year old.

Think this needs a bit more work and might be something to do with him being an orphan.  Got to go out now to the Library for our Help session - will try and have another look tonight.  If he's supposed to be an orphan would have to find the deaths of his parents between 1901 and 1911

I would love a copy of the image please. The fact that he was boarding in Liverpool makes sense as my father-in-law says he had a bit of a scouse accent!
William Cashmore died in 1961 in Ashton but more than that we don't know.
Thanks for your help!

I've found the other William Cashmore in 1911,at Toxteth Park, they are indexed as Cashmere

Ada, mother, is married but no husband at house aged 28yrs
William 11yrs
George 6yrs
Ada 4yrs.
Isabel 8mths
Joe, a cousin, 29yrs.,
All born Liverpool

So this William is a different one.

I've noticed that the place where 15yr old William is living is a boys home, so its possible that he wasn't born in Liverpool as it says, all the boys are apprentices of some sort. In 1901 there is a William Cashmore living with his grandparents in West Brom, he was born Stepney, London. Might be worth while looking at this one, I'll do that later to see if I can exclude him.

His death says he was 65 in 1961 so it sounds like he was abt 15 on the 1911 census have you got Williams m cert it will give his fathers name and we could go from there. Fudge

Forget the West Brom William Cashmore, I've discounted him.

Hello Tracy,

I can't send you a copy of the 1911 Census because your email address is hidden - if you could email me I would then have your return address.

A long gap - but I now know William Cashmore was a foreman at Williamson Printers in Ashton. He was also a compositor and then reader.
