Hello Herby. Hugh Mason built a pool as part of his facilities for his workers in the Oxford Mills community. These were close to Oxford Mills, and were not the municipal baths in Henry Square. Those were built by the council although in fact Mason was a member of the council at that time.

Yes, I also thought it was Hugh Mason that built the baths Herby! Thanks for the update Martin, it just goes to show that we can learn something new every day.

Hartshead Pike is still where it has been since the end of the Ice Age.

Then someone went and built a wooden tower on top of it. That tower fell to bits so someone else built a stone tower a few yards away from old one. That tower fell down until eventually someone else came along and re-built it.

Hi Albert, and I was being serious. Hartshead Pike is the name of the hill, not the pointy thing! ;)

Hi Martin the sign post was not pointing to the hill or the monument.  I think local folk would think of the monument rather than the
hill. But its your site

Oh dear! It's not a case of "it's my site so I can say things that keep me happy". :)

I was just pointing out that the "pike" is the hill, just like Alphin Pike, Harridge Pike, Scafell Pike, Rivington Pike, etc. But I am well aware that a lot of local people think that the pike is the tower.

It seems that my attempt at humour has fallen flat on its face. Oh, well. It doesn't matter greatly!

Wouldn't worry about it too much Martin, there's a lot of people think Big Ben is a building somewhere in London as well  ;)

Isn't Big Ben a hill, then?
