"ramping" "ramps"
I had to search the grey matter but it came eventually.
I must do a little research

The best I can come up with, Jaywit, is

v. to ramp

1. to rush around or act in a threatening or violent manner

2. to assume a threatening stance, as in rearing up on hind legs

3. Heraldry - to stand in the rampant position

Origins - Middle English "rampen" and/or Old French "ramper", to rear, rise up

This suggests that we were running wild and causing mayhem which just wasn't the case. We operated secretively and with some caution. First we would spy on the opposition, then, when the coast was clear we were in and stealing the wood we wanted before making an extremely quick exit - sometimes even under the cover of darkness.

Thanks again Kennetho.  There's beauty to be found in every season.  Here's a fledgling blue tit captured in Spring this year...
