HI  no wonder they say the new going out is staying in , what with local pubs closing cheap booze from the super markets , not that i smoke but no smoking ban , and food home deliveries , not so much on tv but you can pick up a good film to watch , i know that the atmosphere and the pleasure of a break away from the house is not the same , but the home entertainment seems to be catching on , how do they get there entertainment in other parts of the world , i know the aussie go for there BAR B QS  Cheesy

My enjoyment is to be sat at my computer with a glass of wine doing my family tree or helping any one who is stuck Fudge

Am generalising quite a bit here but most of the 'pubs' in NZ and OZ are simply booze barns aimed squarely at the 'younger' generation, then there are the 'clubs' such as the returned services, sports, surfing and bowling clubs where you can get a meal and play the one armed bandits (pokies). There are a few 'locals' but these are usually country pubs mainly supported by the local farming community and are probably as close to a traditional British pub as you'll find anywhere, this type of 'local' is doing it tough at the moment as the smoking ban hits and many have either closed or become backpackers accommodation. On top of all that is a slow realisation that drinking and driving is no longer big, clever or socially acceptable and it's little wonder that more and more people are doing the majority of their socialising at home or at the homes of friends.

On a personal level I can probably count the number of pubs visited down under in the last 30 years without taking my socks off, the last time I went to the cinema was about 15 years ago and the last time Mrs Kiwi and I went out for meal was the 'works Xmas do' last year, however we regularly meet with family and friends for a glass or three and a feed and it's almost always in the home, usually on a reciprocal basis and it's common courtesy (a pre-requisite to be honest) to BYO and 'bring a plate'  Wink

Must admit I still like to go out.  Pubs are nicer now there's no smoking but they seem so expensive.  I love going for a meal and enjoy going to the cinema. I hadn't been much for years but the new cinemas are so comfortable and you can book in advance online so you're sure of a seat. (Remember queuing outside the Odeon in the cold and damp for the latest James Bond only to be told they were full up just as you got near to the front!).

The thing that always got me out of the house was the thought that I might be missing something - unfortunately I never was (and still aren't).

You've hit the head on the nail there jan.  Neighbours I had at the last place moved to the other side of Manchester and knew more about what was going on around me than I did myself.

I'll be jumping in my legs shortly and having a wander round.  The thought of staying in, especially with the stuff that's on TV, doesn't appeal to me.  I've just checked my cans of beer and they're all past their sell by date.  Drinking at home, unless it's a pot of tea, isn't for me.
