Smile, please! / Re: Lets start with a smile

One definition of a gentleman is "a man who knows how to play the bagpipes, but doesn't".

The definition of perfect pitch is being able to throw a set of bagpipes into the toilet without hitting the sides, same goes for the banjo.

Followed by the banjo player.

General Discussion / Re: LOSING GREAT FRIENDS.
« on: January 17, 2019, 03:36 PM »
10 years!? seems like yesterday.Time seems to fly by quicker the older one gets.
i posted a message so long ago to her,GG and I actually met around
70 plus years ago.
We lived on Timperley Rd and next door lived the Buckleys. One day a girl was babysitting her brothers young  (very young)baby. The baby was crying for some reason and the young girl was having no success in pacifying  the baby.My mam having 5 children at that time ,stepped in.
Got a boiled sweet (fruit drop) tied it in a hanky and let the baby suck it.
It worked.
GG happened to be the baby sitter and as she remembered,I was the little chubby boy from next door.
This was her memory which jogged mine.It must have been the early 40's.

General Discussion / Re: 2018 christmas
« on: December 24, 2018, 04:05 PM »
Christmas seems to be a time of gathering together.
I seem to have dropped off a little this year but always make it back for Christmas.I often wonder who  are still with us after long absences.
DJ. DannyX.Pam,Assheton,Bardsleycrow,Bill,brian seward,burlington,calvers,chrisandangie,Denise,eggstoocool02,GayJ,Meg,
Son of Nomad,
I don't know how Kiwi and Kennetho are so prolific???
I wonder if Facebook and Twitter are responsible for that?
Sad news about Herby and also Ashtonian.
TIME is the only thing money can't buy.
Merry Christmas to all from this side of the pond and pray that something positive comes along in the new year!!!

Murphy's law seems to apply apptly.
I hope things do go right, but having Gypsies camping in the front yard could be a bit of a turn off for negotiations(as in over a barrel) a fair and reasonable price.
just a weird thought

Talking about Ashton / Re: New building update video
« on: November 21, 2018, 05:31 PM »
I've been wondering if any one has thought how much the new building will eventually cost.
Carillon were always low ballers to make sure they obtained the contract and made the costs  up with extras, problems and overruns.
I think it would be an eyeopener as to the way Council does approve big item infrastructure projects.
It may be long cold winter so a search could prove to be a good distraction.
That's if all the records and meeting minutes are intact, which to my mind the way that contract has progressed will probably be missing ,deleted,or some other coverup reason.
Normally when a new contractor has to complete an existing contract it can be a license to print money for them.
Impossible to estimate so it ends up costing, who knows.

just a thought

Memory Lane / Re: PUBS IN ASHTON
« on: November 16, 2018, 05:00 PM »
On my last visit we were thinking where to have tea (Dinner)!!!
It was around 6.30.
On past visits we have used a few eating pubs,Witherspoons etc.
we turned up at The Caledonian one night and was told that night was a no food night????
The next time we tried to dine there the place was closed but some staff were in but the door locked.I rapped on the window and a guy came to the door.
They had decided to close EARLY.

Memory Lane / Halloween i
« on: November 01, 2018, 02:59 AM »
Still thoughtful? but after 51 years what the heck. I make a fire in the basement,no lights on ,bell disconnected(hardwired?).Not that I'm a miserable sod but I've served my time Halloween wise.
Just a time for ourselves, which is great.
No non sense
Halloween is just another former religious occasion that Mammon has turned into a brainless celebration of anti-social behavior.

Round and About / Re: Memories of living in a Prefab

Hartshead estate was planned to be prefabricated houses.
Concrete slabs made on site and then erected. The first 4 pairs of semi's on Gambrel Bank Road were built this way.
All the rest of the estate are usual bricks.
The Company was called "Beanland" I seem to think they were a US company.
I could do a bit of digging but I may be chain sawing some Walnut tree branches today which were over hanging my sons pool.Squirrel attack of the nuts stains all the pool area with almost black stains which are almost impossible to remove.

I'm still thinking about the Miracle and how it could have happened.
Maybe warrant a call to Bell,"not wanting to appear a fool"as in (The King's New Clothes) Danny Kaye!!
I am trying to parallel the event.
My recently deceased brother's take on "The Five Loaves and Two Fishes".
How many Ashtonians would go on a days walk from Ashton to Hartshead Pike without a snack.?
His explanation was the multitude all had snacks, but only two from dukky decided they would share theirs.
Sorry Dukky. It just sprang to mind.

Yesterday I was calling a Government agency(Canadian) I was on speaker so my wife could hear and normally we join a queue  of callers.I dialed the 1 800 + + + it rang and then was answered by an accent same as mine.
Went through the usual with a wrong number, then I decided to ask her about her accent.
I happened to have been connected to 011 44 161 330 ****
Spring Bank cres. AUL

He was a sorce of endless PM's with tech stuff etc.Starting with his name which was chosen,he had an E.Euro surname. It happens he chose the same surname as me ,and christian name as a nephew of mine in Seattle. His wife has the same as my wife!!!
He started to get more involved with Twitter and Facebook than this site, which I don't use!!.So we drifted.
I kept in touch with photo postings on Smugmug,P'Base,Yahoo,(Flickr)he seemed to have the same slant as me on subjects.
Maps,Industrial Lancashire especially around Burnley and of course Ashton.
He was here in Toronto visiting his brother which could have been but wasn't an opprtuneity to meet.
He is certainly going to be missed in my neck  of the woods.
RIP  Ian!!

I'm still here Joan.
Passed on the twitter and facebook thingy.
I tend not to log in,so that can account for the perceived loss of presence.
I just end up as a visitor.(Guest) so no trace record.
