Ask a question.... / Changing banks
« on: February 05, 2011, 03:01 PM »
Would welcome any help on the above. Been with the Nat West since the year dot but these days a branch of the Halifax or Santander is much closer. Also both offer incentives to place your current account with them including a small amount of cash monthly. So how easy is the changeover, any pitfalls, are all direct debits done automatically, are pensions etc. transferred, is the 5 per month offered by the Halifax genuine so long as conditions are met? Anyone done a changeover and had problems? Any advise welcome.

                           Many Thanks   Rycrofter

Ask a question.... / The model shop
« on: November 23, 2009, 01:40 PM »
One of the great delights of my childhood was to have a walk from Ryecroft to a certain shop on Old St. to gaze in awe in the window of the Model shop which we new as Charlies. Sometimes, if I had the money I would buy a glider or Airfix kit or something for my railway and though the shop was tiny it was packed with planes and boats and trains that were way out of my league.
But I'd love to know more about "Charlie" and how long did the shop last. It was set back on the right about half way between the baths and the library

Looking for family or friends... / My old friend Sid
« on: November 09, 2009, 05:46 PM »
Way back in the 50's I had as good pal called Sidney Wilde and we lived on Oxford St. and Gibson Terrace. His father,(also called Sid) began a greengrocery buisness and they had a stall on Hyde market. Sid took over the stall later on. He had a brother called David who I used to take to the Odeon at Guide Bridge on a Sat. am.
I moved in the mid 70's and lost contact with the family. Do they still have a stall at Hyde and does anyone know anything about Sid.
Would love to meet up again.

                                           Thank You

Hello everyone, and here is another question that I have wanted to know the answer to for ages. In the 60's there was a small bookies on Cambridge St. just opposite the pub. I only went in a couple of times, mainly to warn my dad that mum was on her way home !!  Who was the bookie ?  Dad named him once or twice but we have forgotten

                                          Cheers everyone  from Rycrofter     ???

Ask a question.... / A pub and a shop in the West End
« on: November 01, 2009, 06:24 PM »
My sister and I have heated discussions re. our childhoods in AUL and would love to know the answers to these questions.
There was a small pub on the corner of Cecil St. and Stockport Rd. in the West End but what was its name ?

Higher up Stockport rd. towards town and on the other side there was a small bakers shop run by an old lady and her daughter. She made the best pies ever but you had to order before 10 30 or hard luck. Can anyone help us with her name? It was the name of the shop itself. Would settle 2 arguments.   ???
