Talking about Ashton / Granville Street Baptist Church
« on: September 07, 2015, 12:47 PM »
I am doing some research into the Cockbrook area.

Does anybody know anything about this church please?

It opened before 1874 but where exactly was it on Granville Street?

When did it close?

A brown plaque is to be put on the building at the Heritage Open weekend in September.

The history group that I attend are researching the old Mechanics Institution / Heginbottom School building on the corner of Church Street and Warrington Street.

We would be pleased to hear any memories of the building that you may have.

Do you have any family stories from when it was used as a Military Hospital in WW1?

Did you attend Heginbottom Girls School?

Did you work there?

Did you do an Adult Learning course when Tameside used the building in the 70s, 80s and 90s?

Genealogy / John Thomas and Mary Riley
« on: April 26, 2012, 10:45 AM »

I saw this message on rootschat and wondered if anyone on here could help as it always amazes me what information people know.

Does anyone have any information on John Thomas and Mary Riley of 2 Boyds Building , Gorsey Lane,  Ashton. They were born at Warslow and Fawfieldshead, Staffordshire.

Also their daughter Sarah who married Harry Marland in 1915,and went to live in New Mills / Disley.

What  I really want to know is if anyone knows of children who went to live with the Riley's at their address or the Marlands in New mills. This would be in the 1920s.

I have checked Cheshire BMD and found that
Sarah Ann Riley  and John Marland married at St John's Church, Hurst in 1915.

Talking about Ashton / the Coach and Horses
« on: March 16, 2012, 10:23 PM »
This is a post copied from Rootschat. I wonderd if anyone could help.

'Hi everyone
Is there anybody with access to 'A Directory of Ashton Pubs and their Licensees"?
I can't find an on-line version.
I'm looking for a Lizzie Lane who was the licensee in 1911. She had just been widowed. By 1912 she is Lizzie Frost, and in the bankruptcy courts!
I'd like to find out how long she had been there, and if her husband William Lane had been the licensee before her in 1911 or further back.
Any picture that might be in there would also be great as it is now demolished evidently.'

Memory Lane / The Brunswick hotel Katherine Street
« on: March 16, 2012, 01:07 AM »
On Rootschat, there is a request for information about this hotel.

Does anyone know the date it closed?

Can anyone remember any of the landlords - the Sharp family? A tragic road accident in Yorkshire in 1961 involving one of the family?

Round and About / Kilshaw Lane Hooley Hill Audenshaw
« on: March 12, 2012, 02:15 AM »

I have come across this name several times in the 1881 census Kilshaw Lane and wondered if anyone knew where it was.

It is not Kershaw Lane, it was  in Hooley Hill.
