Genealogy / Old Bailey
« on: March 08, 2017, 06:38 PM »
Hello all, if any of you found that some of your ancestors had been in trouble with the law.  www.oldbaileyonline.com is free to search for very old court cases. It is quite amusing just to read some of the cases and how they were worded.

Genealogy / most accurate genealogy website

Can anyone advise me which paid for genealogy website is the best please, I am trying to find out about my fathers family. This probably sounds silly but I don't have a clue about them. My dad never mentioned his family except that his mother died when he was very young. All I know is his date of birth and death and that he married my mother at St. Michaels in Ashton in 1929. He died when I was thirteen, most of the time he was working then he was gone. Why don't we ask questions when people are around ? It wasn't until I started doing my family tree that I realised half my family was missing and there is nobody left to ask.

Genealogy / Meg's Brooks family
« on: January 14, 2017, 06:17 PM »
Hello Meg, it seems we share a great grandfather John Brooks. John died in Sheffield in 1937 aged 81. Four generations and three branches of the family seemed to have moved to Sheffield in the early 1930's , something pretty drastic must have happened to cause  them all to move. I tracked them down from burial records.

Genealogy / lost families in Sheffield
« on: December 18, 2016, 06:33 PM »
hi all, If any of you had family members who moved to Sheffield for work when the mills closed and you can't find them in census records, Sheffield Indexers have a great burial section. I have found the graves of relatives I didn't know I had. It gives the address where they died, age, employment , grave number and you can see who else is buried in that grave as well.
Sorry if this is old news.

Memory Lane / Belle Vue Zoo
« on: December 16, 2016, 07:54 PM »
Hi every one, I'm a new member. I was born in Sheffield but my mother was born in Ashton and my dads family moved to Stalybridge in 1906. they moved to Sheffield in the thirties. We used to go to visit the relatives in Ashton when I was little and always.
went to the zoo. To be honest I remember the zoo a lot better than the relatives, but I was only about eight or nine when the visits stopped and adult talk is pretty boring when you are young. I always got upset when we went in the elephant house they looked so sad. I would be grateful if anyone can tell me where I can find old photo's of Belle Vue zoo
