Talking about Ashton / Oldish photo showing Ashton
« on: March 17, 2014, 07:51 PM »
I have been going through my parents photo albums and scanning the interesting one.
I decided to share this one here as it was shot in Ashton during the Whit Walks of 1969.

My sister Wendy is in the foreground.

Memory Lane / What's in the back of your garage?
« on: July 03, 2013, 04:42 PM »
I was clearing out the garage (and shed) at my parent's former house on Taunton Rd. over the weekend.
My Dad never threw anything away.
We gave away two petrol lawn mowers that weren't working, then I found a third with the engine in pieces.
I also found two cobbler's lasts and a posser.
There are a couple of old wash tubs my dad was using for storing stuff.

Talking about Ashton / A doctor's account book for 1829 to 1833
« on: September 26, 2012, 02:26 PM »
In one of the surgeries my Dad took over in the 1960s he found an old account book. Before he died he agreed to donate it to a local museum, but with my Mum's illness it got lost and we only found it again recently.

It lists the names, addresses, occupations of patients, and the treatments and charges. For example there was a Peter Jackson who made candles and had his thumb amputated. Mostly it lists the people who could afford the doctor, but there is an entry titled Parish which lists some poor patients.
