Memory Lane / Pop Singers and groups
« on: January 20, 2018, 03:15 PM »
Can anyone enlighten me regarding local pop groups and singers?  I can recall a Sheila Buxton who often sang on BBC radio.  The Orions I recall from the 1960's.  Was there a group with local connections called St. Louis Union who covered a Beatles hit?  Were there other artists from Ashton who made it big time?

Hi Vanessa,  I don't think there were any children from either of his marriages.  I may contact the Anson Engine Museum who seem to have a limited amount of information regarding National Engines.

Round and About / Re: DISTRICTS IN ASHTON
« on: January 26, 2017, 08:52 PM »
A lot depends on date.  For example Limehurt Rural District which comprised Alt (Parkbridge), Lees, Crossbank, Hartshead, Knott Lanes, Waterhouses (DaisyNook), Woodhouses, Littlemoss, Taunton, Waterloo, Bardsley came to an end around 1953/4.  Districts were split between Ashton, Oldham, Failsworth etc.

Bardsley became part of Oldham as did Lees and Crossbank.  Not sure about Alt and Parkbridge.

Cockbrook, Hooley Hill, Luzley may be.  And when did Littlemoss become part of Manchester?

Hi Vanessa,  Thanks for the info re Frank Wood.  His first wife died 1947, and he and his second wife died 1970's/80's so not quite sure why they are unobtainable on the 1939 register.  They moved from Brampton to Hazel Grove area about the time of big changes at the National.  I have noticed a number of references to people working on munitions/gas engine works and assume the National were engaged on essential war work.  Apparently a Miss K. M. Taylor was the canteen manageress in the 1950's and not Frank Woods second wife as I thought.

Does anyone have information from the 1940's - 1960's regarding the managers of the National Gas Engine Company.  I am lead to understand that Frank Wood who resided at Brampton, Taunton Road, was the works manager - confirmation required.  Was his wife - Lilian Wood the canteen manager?

Memory Lane / Co-op cafe and The Lounge
« on: January 19, 2017, 10:17 PM »
Can anyone recall a Co-op cafe on Stamford Street near to Yates Wine Lodge?  A relative claims to have had a wedding reception there in about 1950.  Also can anyone recall who owned or ran The Lounge Cafe cum high class cake shop on Stamford Street in the 1950's - 60's.  The cakes were superb.  Any information gratefully received.

General Discussion / Harry Allen - Executioner
« on: July 13, 2015, 05:16 PM »
I wonder if any one has local information regarding Harry Allen - the last public executioner.  It seems he worked as a bus driver for Ashton Corporation in the 1940's and 50's.  He had a sister who lived on Lumb Lane, Littlemoss, near the former Post Office.

Thank you Martin and Son of Nomad.  That looks like the right place to me, not too far from Old Street.  All I need now is some old photographs of that area!

Can anyone indicate where Percy Street and Hibberts Yard might have been in about 1900.  I think possibly between Brook Street and Old Street but not sure.

Talking about Ashton / Qualitex Yarns
« on: January 30, 2013, 10:30 AM »
Can anyone recall what the name of the product was produced by Qualitex Yarns?  I keep thinking it was 'Crimplene' but that seems to be an ICI brand.  Were they based in the Alger or Cedar Mill and which mill belonged to J.A. Pattreiouex?  Apart from Senior Service what other cigarette brands were produced in the Ashton factory?
