We took our 10 year old grandaughter to Morecambe for the day yesterday and the weather was perfect. She was delighted to be able to spend some time on the beach and the funfair of course, and we had a look round the indoor and outdoor markets. Also pleased to see they had the continental market on too. Wonder if we`ll ever get that back in Ashton.

A question for those now living overseas, having left the British weather behind - how do you strike up a conversation with strangers?
Not a problem, moaning about the weather is a universal pastime, just ask our resident banana benders (if and when power is ever restored)  ;)

Had a couple of holidays in Morecambe when I was a child. I went back two or three years ago and was dismayed at how down-at-heel the place looked! Has it improved at all? I hope so! Heysham was still lovely!

In Queensland at this time of the year quite a few of the Southerns come here for 2 or 3 months to escape the colder weather. It is always very easy to recognise them for most of us wear shorts & the sandy shores attract them to sunbake & swim. We look at the crowd & the Queenslanders are the ones with a Tan & the others are the white  Southeners with what we call "Milk-bottle Tan. They stand out for a week or two especially when they are on the beach.   Jayess

It`s a bit better in Morecambe now, Assheton. They`ve had a new promenade done and the big white, curved hotel on the prom has been bought and had loads of work done on it and is now re-opened after ? number of years. They`ve also had tons of sand tipped, making a lovely beach after having nothing but shingle for many years. Still a lot more to be done, but they are slowly getting there.

HI..Just come back from lake garda (italy) the temp was in the 80/90s it was just hell it was to hot to move, the hotel would not switch the fans on, they said july/aug,you just could not breath, it was nice to get back to good old england this afternoon and freeze to death.      8)  :-*  8).
Title: Re: Weather or not.
Post by: musky on May 27, 2009, 07:33 PM
Yes Nan. Morecambe is getting a lot better since the prom and stone jetty were improved. Did you go in the Midland Hotel?, it is very nice, been in a few times since it reopened last year it's nice to just sit in the conservatory with a drink and enjoy the fabulous views across the bay and admire the spectacular sunsets in the evening. I used to have a caravan at Denny Beck just outside Lancaster for 4 seasons so it was ideal for Morecambe and the Lakes, still go up most weekends the indoor & outdoor Markets are good and Hitchens is still open. Morecambe has always been a special place to me after going on a day trip with the school as a kid and was taken with it. I even went there on my honeymoon and one day I will live there.

My Grandaughter loved Morecambe so much we went back for seconds yesterday and took her Mum[my daughter] and younger brother with us. Once again, we had a perfect day weatherwise. Brilliant sunshine and a cloudless blue sky. We all came home looking as if we`d been on holiday .

Hi Musky. No we didn`t go in Midland. It was too nice to be indoors, but we may call in on some future visit. The outside looks very nice and there were lots of cars parked in the front car park. Regards..Nan

By the Midland do you mean the lovely art deco hotel on the front in Morecambe? It has just been restored hasn't it? I used to love family holidays in Morecambe. After breakfast I was allowed to go down to Sandylands on my own to buy a toffee apple! Happy days! I went back three years or so ago and was sad as I thought the whole place had a run-down look. Heysham was lovely too!

Hi Musky. Only just spotted your question for me. Sorry about that. Yes, been to Rita`s cafe on several occasions, including our visit last time. Always got a decent meal there, and reasonably priced. Didn`t know the owners came from Hyde though. Always found them very helpful and pleasant.

Got home last night from a lovely weekend spent just outside Nottingham. Went to a family wedding and the weather was brilliant. Stayed overnight at a lovely hotel on the banks of the River Trent at Gunthorpe. Had an excellent room overlooking the river and really enjoyed the break, inspite of being wakened up about 3.30am by a load of ducks quacking their heads off as they passed by on the water. It was called "The Unicorn Hotel " and both accommodation and food were first class. If anyone`s down that way it`s well worth a try.

Hope this dry spell keeps up for a bit longer. Going to stay over on the East Coast on Thursday for 10 days. With a bit of luck,we may get some nice days. Staying at a little place called Ulrome which is 7 miles south of Bridlington. Very quiet spot with only the bird life and the waves breaking on the shore to break the silence, and only about 15 mins from Brid if you want a bit more to do. Ahhhh! perfect bliss.

Hello greeny/Fudge.

Not like the pea soupers of old though.

A place where I used to work was at the bottom of a dip near a river and it was a notorious fog trap.  A lot of the people who worked there lived in Manchester and on one occasion the fog was so thick that the management let them leave early, while it was still light.

When they got to the top of the hill, the sun was shining.  After that, the management always sent out a 'scout' to see what it was like up the hill.

Connolly's Cables in Blackley?

Hi Bill no nothing like the Pea Soupers we use to get . Funny though like a drunk you found your way home even though it took a lot longer. Then when you arrived home it was no different because you could hardly see in your house . Fudge

Once , coming home one night from watching the Panto , the Smallshaw bus took awrong turn in the fog and we ended up going down turning into the wrong road after the Broadoak hotel , the driver thought we were going up Broadoak road ::)
We would wrap our scarves aroung our faces to keep out the fog, but everything smelt disgusting and filthy . :P

When the temperature is this high for so long we mainly stay in doors where, in Australia, most houses have at least one room air-conditioned. We are fortunate to have our bedroom airconditioned also so that we can sleep well at night. Likewise most cars are also airconditioned making it a little more bearable when you do have to go out!!! An up date on the weather forecast - it will be 41C on Sunday back to 28C on Monday and then mid to high 30'sC for the remainder of the week!!!!

There's a suggestion in today's paper that garlic should be added to cow's feed to combat that 'backdraft'. I presume it could be good for their digestion as in humans. The downside would be that the milk would taste strange.     Denise   ???

A little bit of trivia.

The following are the sunset times for the past few days and for the next few days for Ashton.  Taking today as the middle of the 'earliest sunsets', the nights should now start to draw out.  Soon be spring.

Dammed if I Do,Dammed if I Don't  :-\   Im gigging in Dukinfield new years eve,and I keep hearing whispers of bad snow Tues/Weds,but on further research, sky news says this is coming from the south, and parking at North Wales. I am worried,if it comes further,I won't be able to get to the gig on Thurs,if the roads this last week are anything to go by. Should I drop my gear off now at the pub, ensuring I can work, even if I have to,to work,or Iam I over reacting ?

Post by: Denise on December 28, 2009, 02:38 PM
Hi Chris,  This New Year cold spell isn't from the South, only down to 3 degs here on Friday. Think you'll find it's those North, North-Easterly winds hitting exposed North and Eastern coasts, bringing snow showers with them.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/6893844/Snow-and-ice-to-hit-Britain-at-New-Year.html

Hopefully you'll be able to get to your gig fine, although dodgy east of the Pennines. My daughter used to do lots of gigging over there, Christmas and New Year, whatever the weather. Had my heart in my mouth 'til I heard her car in the drive. Still does a bit for weddings, birthdays etc. Recently one for Aston Martin, at a promotion for their new Sports car - had to go to London for that.  Good luck anyway!

Glad we went to Yorkshire yesterday and not today. Didn`t have too much trouble travelling though we had to divert at the roundabout at the start of the road to Holmefirth as the road was closed with the snow. Managed to get through via Uppermill then over Stanedge. The road was clear, but I`ve never see so much snow, At one point, we passed a car [at the side of the road ]that was buried up to it`s roof. Real "Christmas card" scenery though. It was surprising how many motorists were stopping to take pictures. Took some myself, but through the car window. Made it home safely, and woke up this morning to this lot.

Spent a day in Newbury, Berks, yesterday, weather was glorious. Sat by the River Kennet, with hot West Cornwall pasties, and watched the swans and moorhens.
Bought a new jacket (bargain), put it on and left my old one at a charity shop. Off with the old etc...... Surprising what a bit of good weather and some retail therapy does to get rid of those winter blues.       :D

It has gone bitter cold again, we've had light snow showers on and off all day down here. It's my daughter's 40th and grandson's 8th birthdays on Sat 13th (she had him on her birthday). She was born Friday 13th, 1970 and snow was thick on the ground when  I was in Ashton General.  Remember Sister Kelly, on the post-natal ward, shouting, "Nurse, close this window, this child is freezing!", and she went herself to get an extra cot blanket to put over her.  Didn't bother about me!!      :D

I had a visit from the police yesterday !!My soon to be ex daughter in law took into her head to have a police escort so she could pick up some stuff from the flat . I,ve never seen an American police man up close , but after getting over the shock ( I thought something had happened to my son!!! )I got chatting with them and they were very nice , they actually told HER off before they left !!!They said that they wished everyone was as easy going as me !!( Turned on the Ashton charm  :D)

Hi Pamela,  Thanks for the greetings, I'll pass them on. As you can guess, it's going to be quite an expensive weekend!!

Yes, Washington has been hit badly, Obama's limo had a slight bump, apparently! Bullet-proof, but not blizzard-proof!!!
Not that bad here, and hope it's not going to be like it was in January - that's quite enough for this year, thanks!!

Fancy coming round with a police escort - (although sounds exciting!) - what did she think you were going to do? She's been watching too much Judge Judy on TV. In fact, it's Judge Judy you need, she doesn't stand any nonsense. Do you get her over there, she's on at 6-ish here. Anyway, that Ashton charm will do it every time!!!  All the best to you and your son and hope your dear family back home are ok. Hold your heads up, you've done nothing wrong.   :)

We got married in January 76 and were typically short of money. Didn't have a fridge and that summer was SO hot.
We lived in Astley near to a senior school with a large (dry!) grass playing field and the fear was that the timber yard near by would catch fire and the flames would spread across the field to the houses.  We all had a small bag packed containing papers and treasured possessions in case we had to get out in the night in a rush!.

The way I see it the clocks shouldn't change at all. It's a silly, irritating and outdated practice in these modern times when we have electric lamps.

They don't bother with it in Queensland where Herby lives, consequently in the middle of summer it's light by 4.30 am and dark again by 7 pm, you end up being unable to get a decent nights sleep coz the local birdlife kicks off about 3.30 am. Most people are already bushed before they start work around 8 ish,  then you get home about 6 pm and have to run around and get everything sorted before dark then and still end up with a huge electric bill from running the lights while you have your evening meal, Ah the joys of sub-tropical life  :)

Didn't they try permanent Summer Time in the late 60's and kids ended up going to school in the dark ??

Watched an old edition of 'QI' last evening, one of my favourite panel games. Stephen Fry pointed out that generally when we Brits refer to cold temperatures we use Celcius i.e. -2 degs, but Fahrenheit for warmer weather i.e. 84degs!!  Wonder why that is?    :-\
Title: Re: Weather or not.
Post by: Ashtonian54 on April 06, 2010, 07:08 PM
I find Fahrenheit easier to gauge the coolness or warmness of the weather. for me 68-74 is an ideal comfortable temperature range.
84 would be very warm, 90-100 hot  105  stay indoors.

Even though I was raised metric and used Celsius and used that temperature scale at the laboratory I worked at in Stalybridge, and later in Blackley, it does not translate well for me.
As for cold 3 C is bobbins!

Decided to go to Chester for the day this morning. Set off with cloudy skies and a light shower on the motorway but arrived there to glorious sunshine. Thought we`d park up in the centre and find somewhere nice for lunch, and that was just about all we did there. It was packed and we had to go on the multi storey car park at Grosvenor Shopping Centre, where we were ripped off to the tune of 5.10 and were only there for an hour and three quarters. Then we decided to go down by the river and were lucky enough to find a free parking spot, so we spent a while sitting, watching the boats go by. It was lovely and really warm. We finished off by sitting outside a tea rooms with a pot of tea. A perfect end to a nice leisurely day.

Almost the same here.Went to Stratford(basically to see a friend who is in a constant care facility for Alzheimer's)Made a flask of coffee, half a pork pie, tomato, packet of crisps,(chips)couple of Christmas almond tarts out of the freezer.Parking meters all over, even at the Information Kiosk! All the public toilets weren't open yet as it is too early in the season.
Found a free parking spot down by the river,(after paying a visit to the washrooms in a coffee shop). The swans had only just been re sighted after the winter(they make a big song and dance of the occasion by having a piper pipe them into the lake/river)
The sun was warm but there was a bit of a breeze making it a bit cool.
Some women have no sense having young children dressed like it was the middle of summer,no socks, short sleeve shirts no hats. The mother was dressed the same also and she must have been freezing. But it was good to get out even though it has been a mild winter.

Title: Re: Weather or not.
Post by: Joyce_in_Canada on April 08, 2010, 06:50 PM
Neither of those Jan!  I read a definition (can't remember where exactly now), it actually began with the gentlemen bowlers of old during cricket matches, which included a lady by the name of May!  To cut a long story short, apparently a really big "bowl" was called a "clout", and being very nice gentlemen they didn't want to bowl "May" out of the match by sheer force of their strength, so the saying came about amongst the teams - "ne'er cast a clout 'til May is out"!!!   :o   Wasn't that nice of them?   ;D ;D 8)
Well, that's what I read anyway - but my Mum used to make me wear itchy hand-knitted vests until May!   :D ;)

Hi Ian,  My Mum would have mixed that for her. Chloridine (these days classed as an addictive preparation) would just disinfect and numb the mouth/throat and squills would loosen the cough. Blood tonics were popular - funnily enough, the morning after the night before!   ;)

With the help of my travel pass, I've just had a few hours in the sunshine in Blackpool.  I had a good walk round but got bored fairly quickly and caught the early train back.

Bus to Piccadilly and back plus train to Blackpool and back - 11.20 all in.

Hi Bill,  The last time I went to Blackpool by train it cost 2 shillings return but I admit it was a very long time ago & other times I visited was by car.  The last time it was 1990 and we were on a couple of months holiday travelling around UK. It was late May & we were driving along the front from St Annes & I needed a toilet, saw one so stopped. There was not a soul around so into the toilet, I was there for about 3 minutes & walked out to see a Female Parking Officer going to book me. I asked her what I done to deserve a ticket & she asked where I lived so I gave my Aussie address -- She closed her book & kept us answering her questions about Australia for about 20 minutes and no ticket. That was my last experience of Blackpool. Always loved to see the illuminations in the old days. __ Jayess

There are some days when you wish you could stop the clock and today was one such.  After a couple of tar-bubble days, the weather was perfect and my legs dragged me out for a walk.

Passing the old baths and seeing it in bright sunshine and with a blue sky above, i.e. everything going for it appearance-wise, it still looked well past its sell by date.

Why not knock it down (but retain the chimney) and build a exact replica that meets all the current building regulations and that would serve a useful purpose?

I must admit I don't like to see old buildings knocked down. But there are now four buildings in Ashton that are in great disrepair They are the Baths ,York House. The big house on Broadoak Rd and Tameside Theatre is going that way. I don't know what the answer is but it is such a shame to see them now Fudge

I saw John Wayne in "Hatari" at the "Hippo" drome  in 1962

I love history and the preservation of buildings but my view on Hugh Masons baths are that they really need to be taken down as well as the Tameside Hippodrome.

Although the building now has the bogus name of Hugh Mason House, those were not Hugh Mason's baths! He opened his baths at Ann Street in 1886, as part of his Oxford Community, three years before the Henry Square baths were opened. Hugh Mason's baths have already been taken down.

The old Ashton baths would look better if the breeze blocks window and door closures were removed and replaced with old bricks or the door/windows replaced and the building cleaned. Then either convert it back to a swimming pool (the new swimming pool is useless), or a keep fit centre, or even convert it to a little theatre for the local amateur dramatics and other theatre groups to use.

I went out yesterday on an errand when there was a bit of a lull, but had to turn back before I had gone a killometre I waited half an hour till it eased a bit then went back I just couldn't see through the rain. Its eased a bit to-day but its coming back Friday one good thing all the reservoirs are over flowing. Me too Ashtonian  :)  We had so much rain recently we couldnt do anything with the garden and it was wonderful just to get out there and sort it all out.  I know some people don't like the autumn (Must admit I'm sometimes not too keen as it heralds winter and I get SAD to some extent) but I like all the tidying up and preparing the place for a rest in the colder weather.  All the bulbs will go in this weekend and they're always something to look forward to. We're trying to get an all year round look for the garden (emphasis on the trying!) and keep checking books and other gardens for inspiration.  A trip to Wisley is planned with notebooks to see what they have on show in the middle of winter.

For some reason I have only just spotted this. I don't know how reliable the star app on your phone is, Chris, but Pluto is not visible to the naked eye! Don't forget that it wasn't even discovered until 1930. As far as I can tell, Pluto is currently somewhere on the far side of the Sun, which would probably make it impossible to see with a home telescope, due to the Sun's brightness.

Reading and seeing  the rotten weather in Europe made me a bit jealous ,( I have Bills pic of Hartshead pike as a screen saver) we,ve not had significant rain for months , last Friday was another cloudless , sunny, warm day, much to my disapointment ...the lack of rain means we,ve got water rationing , the mains water is only on for 5 hours a day , everywhere is dusty , flu has been raging for months , asthma is very common due to the dust ....anyway the good Lord must have said enough !! Cos the heavens opened on Friday night , we,ve had almost a full years rain over the last 2 days ...plus we had thick snow falls  on Saturday and Sunday , the schools were closed today and all the kids are out building snowmen ...absolutely wonderful ...apparently an area of low pressure settled over us causing storms..the more the better I say !!

Thanks for your concern Jaywit!   As you say, we're really being clobbered here in London and area and I'm literally sick and weary from it all as are even the hardiest of "winterites"!    At last count (halfway through December) they say London has had 122.2cm (it never stopped for three days recently) and - as you say - more is on the way as well as being cold and windy at times too.  Can't get out of my driveway at the moment because the City snowplow left a great load of frozen hard-packed ice in it from the roadway, and I'm not allowed to shovel that stuff any more because of my already damaged leg muscles!   However, hope my relatives can arrive safely for our Christmas this weekend (just have my tree to decorate now) - they'll be travelling from Newmarket along the 401 and we all know what that Woodstock area is like!   :o   We had a lovely sunny if cold morning today, but that's long gone and now they're predicting more snow each day beginning tomorrow.
Did you hear today's TV news about the poor soul who was found frozen to death because he left his vehicle after being stuck in a snowdrift on his way to work.  He was a nightwatchman and phoned someone to say he was going to try and walk to work.  It never pays - we have been warned time and again - never leave your vehicle.  His body was actually within sight of a nearby farmhouse and his place of work in the opposite direction!  The army helicopters and police on snowmobiles found all the other stranded motorists, or so they say.  This is the worst London has seen since 1977, and that was bad enough as I well remember!  Roll on Spring!   ;D

I remember in 1980, walking to glossop to get my LP Dare by the human league. I called for my friend in hollingworth first. Millbrook had been leveled by the snow, it was up to my chest, and sometimes higher, that was proper snow  ;D

Hot Cold off the press.  I've just checked the temperature outside (23:15) and it's -10C.  Amazingly, walking home tonight I passed loads of houses with the curtains wide open.  They've obviously had an austerity bypass.

Hello jan.

My thermometer read -11C this morning (even colder outside :)).  Luckily, thawing out the condensate pipe to get my boiler working kept me warm.

With that in mind, I'll modernise the old Chinese saying that he who chops wood gets warm twice into he who thaws out a frozen boiler condensate pipe gets warm twice (and swears a lot into the bargain).

Walking home last night, I wasn't too bothered about the rain.  At least it was giving the pavements a wash after all the snow and salt.

One thought that kept coming into my mind all the way home was that at least I could now look where I was going instead of where I was treading.  A foolish thought indeed.

On the way home, one stretch of pavement was muddy with muck from the grass verge so I decided to walk in the road.  When I thought I'd passed the muddy stretch, I crossed back onto the pavement and at that point made two discoveries.  One was that mud can be just a slippery as ice and the other was that when you land in it, mud sticks to your pants in a way that ice and snow doesn't.

Amazing what you learn. ::)

Lovely morning in Ashton today. After shopping at the market, my husband suggested going for a nice, leisurely drive to Holmfirth. Got past Greenfield and half way along the Holmfirth Rd, ran into the fog, quite bad in places. Amazing really after leaving bright sunlight. Ended up stopping at Compo`s cafe and had a lovely lunch there, then turned round and came home again, so it was worth the drive.

Saddleworth Moor can be a nightmare to drive over when the low cloud hits it, which is often, but as you say, worth the drive to get into Holmfirth.

Damp and miserable here in Ashton today. Can`t dampen my spirits though. To start off with , today my husband and I are celebrating our 48th wedding anniversary, and on Saturday we are moving house. It will be a big upheaval as we are leaving Ashton, where we were both born, and going to live near the coast, Preesall to be exact. It`s just 5 minutes away from Knott End, and a 15/20 minute car ride from Fleetwood ( even quicker on the ferry). Looking forward to it very much, but will miss the old place. So if I`m not seen on here for a while, it`s just till I get my broadband sorted, and I`ll be back on the board soon... Regards to you all,  Nan.

A friend of mine who lives in Thornton Cleveleys told me that the air in Preesall is second to none and that Doctors used to recommend people with chest complants to go and either live there or visit and take in the air. Hi everyone!  Back on line at last. Settling in nicely in our new home and more or less straight now. Can hardly believe we`ve been here a fortnight now. It`s a lovely area and our neighbours are very friendly and helpful. It`s a residential park we are living on and there is a large lake in the centre with a bird sanctuary in the middle, so there are lots of different types of birds and ducks etc, the latter keep coming in the garden to see what they can scrounge. There are statues and fountains all over the place which are lit up at night making a lovely sight.

Same high temps. here in London jaywit, and thought I'd pass on watering the grass too, until I realized the "brown" patches was chinch bugs chomping away at the roots again!   They ate practically the whole of my back yard grass last year, then the raccoons and/or skunks tore up the rest going after white grubs in the spring.   Just nicely coming back in May after re-seeding but looks pretty sad again.  Can't seem to win.   >:(

According to Weather Underground it's a nippy 0c up in Glossop and a balmy 4.9c in Trafford but there's nowhere around the region that's reporting negative readings, humidity is up between 93 and 99% in most places so if it's not already foggy it's gonna be by brekky time.

It's just dropped to 29c in my yard and we'll probably get a convective thunderstorm later  ;)

You want to try a winter here on the Fylde coast for winds. We get the worst I have ever experienced in my life (nearly 67 years of it). We`ve lost lots of night`s sleep through it and anything that can be fastened down in the garden has to be well secured, that includes full wheelie bins and large tubs filled with plants and soil. Also trees down and the lot. Still, had no snow at all so we can`t grumble and when Ashton got the snow last week, we were sitting in the sun in the back garden.

It's taken me a long time to get here, but only a few weeks after reading that Britain is 'hotter than Africa' (the Mail, who else?), and noticing that it's now colder than New Zealand's mid winter, I've reached the point where I no longer trust 'the experts'.

Getting to that point has been hastened by listening to all the guff from those supposedly sorting out the Eurozone but who seem to be pushing it into a deeper hole.

Does anyone else think that 'the experts' have no more idea than the person in the street?
Parts of Kiwi-land were up to their armpits in snow last week so I dunno where these "experts" are getting their facts from  ;) OK so the daytime temperatures in in some bits of Aotearoa might scrape into the high teens around lunchtime but that usually follows a frosty start and by mid afternoon it's cooling down pretty quick.

I've always been wary of "experts", ex being something that was and a spurt being a drip under pressure  ;)

Wish I could send you some of our sunshine and heat, Fudge.    We've been having great weather, at least here in London, Ont.   Yesterday and today it's been 31C with the humidex making it feel like 36C, but we've also had a smog advisory.  I found it hard to breathe properly today and so I did my outside garden work very early this morning from 6:30am.    Supposed to rain tomorrow night and Tuesday, which will be good for the garden and grass.  Then they say back to four more days of sunshine.  We have a young lady weather forecaster on our local news who seems to hit it dead on!   Like I said, I certainly wish I could send some of this over to everyone in dear old UK.   I know how it's making people pretty down in the dumps to have nothing but lousy weather when there should be sunshine.   :) ::)

We tend to keep it at 17 from 6PM(in basement with wood fire for dinner and viewing) to 6am then up to 21.
11 seems a tad cool, the heat during the night rarely clicks in unless it's really cold.

Well, this neck of the world is upside down today.....Poor old Tasmania The Apple Isle is burning and burning badly. 100 houses burned to the ground in a fierce Bush Fire, 4 Large fires burning. 1000's of people in emergency accommodation, some having no place to go back too. Dunalley - Hobart has suffered 40C+ and the wind and heat is still bring more and more fires and homes, properties and animals in danger. The smoke is wicked. People running into the water for safety. The fires are just as fierce in the interland. Where the fires have passed and done their worst, the place looks like a smouldering ghost town.
South Australia, appears that fires are still burning but most of them have been put out or under control.
Victoria burning 2000 hectares burnt out.
New South Wales, appears to be Fire Bug country just now and three teenagers have been arrested for lighting the fires. They say 50 fires burning in a 40+C. Would seem we do not have much cloud cover over most of Oz thus the heat is penetrating.
WA lacking water as usual nothing drastic at the moment except visits from 6 x 3 metre Tiger Sharks seen by the Rescue Helicopter thus clearing many of the beaches for a while whilst the sharks had finished chasing shoals of fish. The beaches full of people trying to cool down from this heat.
We are supposed to get a little reprieve tomorrow (if we see it) by getting a storm or two.

Sent us your wet weather and we will send you ours Ashton!!!

HI Kenny-- I remember them slides he used to make until Mr Duncan went skating (accidently) down one & they were stopped & Mr Broadhurst was given a little talking to.  Mr Duncan never did have a sense of humour. Remember him wanting the boys to play Baseball until he showed us how to be the guy behind the striker & the Striker missed & Duncan stopped the ball with his face protection but he went backwards & fell to the ground with his nose bleeding with all the lads trying to stop chuckling -- End of Baseball --never saw it again. Happy Days. --Jayess

I left Stamford in 1939 & the Teachers of the three rooms from the arch was Edward Friar (TED), next was Turner (Cannot remember his Christian name), & the next was the music room with MR Roberts.   Duncan was the Headmaster & when he took the class everyone tried to sit at the back for he tended to send a shower over you when he spoke. The class behind the arch was the Art class & run by Donnelly (DODO) who I believe became the Headmaster later in life. Jayess

The electric shock thing must has been a tradition handed down to the next science teacher.  I think the name of the science teacher when I was there was Schofield - or was it Higgins?  He / they too did the 'holding hands' shock treatment to us.  Also 'blew up' a 5 gallon plastic drum outside the classroom on the grass by the dining hall - Crompton Street entrance where Mr's "B's" shop was :-))

Nice place Australia we have the top half under water and the bottom half on fire. Its just arriving here now it's been raining all day but the storm is expected to-night I think where Jayess lives  (he lives a bit closer to Ashton than me) they are just starting to cop it. Brisbane is expecting two or three hundred mills over the week end so we will be getting the same I've just been out cleaning the gutters and got soaked. We have a bloody big Leopard tree in front of the house and it's been shedding it's leaves since before Christmas I didn't think of it till the rain water came over the gutters. We are living in a mixed up country aren't we? we are 36+ and expecting more to follow for the rest of the coming week. You are swimming or soon will be!!
We have visitors arriving mid-next week, 2 to Queensland and 1 this end of the continent. Hope they don't get sunstroke or bombarded with water.

Hello Everyone  :)   Thought I'd drop a note to let you know we're in the midst of a huge snowstorm (already got about 14cm just since early this morning), and it looks as though it's going to carry on as predicted until the end of today.   It's really blowing around too.   The company I hire to keep my driveway and walk up to the front door has already been with his huge snowblower once (around 9:30am), but it looks as though he'll be back again later as it's filling up again quite rapidly.
Toronto area (does that include you Jaywit?) are saying it will be the worst snowstorm in the last 5 years, and my niece's husband said he couldn't see out of his office windows in downtown Toronto, so I guess it's pretty bad all along the Hwy. 401 corridor.   It's hitting the North Easterly States very hard too.
I won't be going anywhere for today anyway, that's for certain.  Cold too, as the temp. is only minus 5C at Noon.   Hope everyone is having a milder and better day than here... ;D ;D

We booked for Destin but ended up in Pensacola, same time of the year.I have pictures on the beach with anoraks on,the white sand, could, and has been mistaken for SNOW.
It can and does get cold in fl.
Hope it is warm,a good full day can be spent at the Navy Air Museum.

2010/11 and 2012/13 were both really bad winters. Remembered when I was a child winters were really bad you had to dig out of your houses because the drifts had blown it quite high. No coal we had to go and collect coal bricks to heat the house. I don't enjoy it now but see why the children do Fudge

Hi Kiwi
I'm getting fed up of seeing green grass. I like the brown lawn best doesn't need cutting so often. I've got the wife cutting it now. I had a new knee put in last month and can't manage it just yet. I had a go at the ride on but no go. I'm not supposed to drive for six weeks but I don't think that includes the ride on though.    herby

Hi Herby,

Hope that you have not been 'washed' away? you have had enough to last you for a couple of years now!!! Better send it on to Kiwi and you could drop a few barrels off here on your way to NZ ha ha! Hope your knee soon heals.

Well, I'm looking out of my lounge window right now and it's cold, wet and windy - and that's just our dog! Managed to mow the front lawn before the rain came piddling down so Yah-Boo-Sucks to the weather. Being positive though, a hosepipe ban seems unlikely this year - unlike California.

Started off with a frosty minus 2 which blossomed into a mild 20 something, not bad for the middle of winter here in Godzone, been a damp cold winter so it's nice to see the sun for a change, six weeks since the solstice, things can only get better  ;)
