Thanks Ian.

What baffles me is how a bloke in Burbank knows more about what's happening in Ashton than we do.

P.S. Let's hope that when they reset the webcam clock they can convert the date into (British) English - e.g. 24-01-2010.

I was looking for aerial pictures of Ashton in an effort to locate an underpass below the Ashton South by pass near Chester Sq.
The way I get to The Tameside website is to first click bookmark (favourite) for Martin's site then click his Tameside web cam link then click 'A' then scroll down and click Archives. It was during this process that something caught my eye, where the web cam thumbnail looked different.

I think that underpass was filled in and replaced with light-controlled crossings because people didn't like using it.

hi i remember the underpass there , it changed when the motor way was conpleated and they changed the traffic flow in chester square and manchester road and william street , it is controled by lights now in chester square ,

I have just checked the Web Cam it was 3 15pm clock on Market was 3pm . But how come's at 930am in the morning it still dark with light's on alround Fudge

The frame says 15.50pm  The market clock is 5:00pm and the time is 5:07pm so it's correct at the moment.
I'm not sure when the camera turns on in the morning, as I've always wondered.

Beautiful in Hampshire, white fluffy clouds drifting across a pale blue sky. It did forecast rain today but no sign so far.
Wall-to-wall sunshine all day, but feels like a storm - very close - as we Northerners say. They don't know what I mean down here.    8)

We've had some heavy rain showers recently here in East Anglia - very welcome for the garden and allottment!
Funny thing was that I was at my Mum's yesterday evening and it was dry but 15 miles down the road at home they had torrential rain and thunder and lightning!
Title: Re: Market webcam back
Post by: Denise on July 15, 2010, 01:38 PM
Yes, Jan, that can happen, often only a mile away. It's St Swithin's Day today, and forecasters are saying they can't rule out downpours for the next 40 days. The gardeners will be relatively happy after all the scorching sun - grass down here is like straw.

According to the bypass plans Fudge, it's just going to be a normal junction.  The last time I looked, the bit on the station side was low, so they must intend raising it to the level of Henrietta Street.

Oh dear - I know a big birthday is coming up but I thought it was only the elderly who wore those  ;)
Only kidding - they seem like a good idea in case of bad weather this winter.  I bouht some heavy tread lace ups purely to get me from the car to the office as the tarmac on the car park is never treated and it was like an ice rink early this year.

Am all in favour of keeping warm and safe in cold and icy conditions.Last winter was nightmare and had to walk home from failsworth one sunday after work as no buses, taxis and our car was stuck on  a hill. So this year I want to be prepared just in case. I broke my arm few years ago, ok I was rollerskating but it hurt and don't want to break anything again!!!

I bought some Yaktrax (http://www.yaktrax.com/walker) last year. Sadly the cold weather had stopped by the time they arrived, so I am almost looking forward to giving them a go this year! They are not cheap, but are less dear on Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yaktrax-Pro-Adult-Shoe-Size/dp/B001CZJIOQ/), by the way.
Title: Re: Market webcam back
Post by: lydia on October 26, 2010, 09:02 AM
They are similar to mine from betterware Martin except they have studs underneath instead of coils. Mine were 10.99 and sure I will be needin them this year. As for lifts most of the people I work with live in the opposite direction or like me rely on public transport. One kind friends did get me as far as Smokies one day but conditions too bad to go further and it still took nearly 2 hours walk from there.

It beats me why they pave round the market area and then allow vans to go on and break it all up. It`s the same round the other side. The paving stones looked lovely when first laid, and then what do they do?? Allow fairground rides on(as now) and they are totally ruined. I noticed the ones at the end facing the chemist shop are every which way and someone is going to have a nasty accident one of these days. Has no-one on Tameside Council got any brains at all??

Couple of weeks ago we were at take that and got the same, but still had great time but if we had the the sun or at least dry weather would have been perfect.  We enjoyed both concerts but cant wait for the link to the metro now as would have made last night even easier.

Thought you might like to know about our current heat wave with the following link - it doesn't really mention London as such but we're right in between Windsor and Toronto, so it's just as hot here and I'm staying inside for comfort's sake.

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/ontario-heat-wave-breaking-temperature-records-174428844.html

I was out trying to do a bit of weed-pulling at 6am this morning but after about 10 minutes came inside to cool off.  The weeds are flourishing but my flowers are shrivelling and dieing everywhere.   :'(

Hi Fudge - all that fun activity you see on the Weymouth Esplanade Webcam is because this is "Carnival Day" of Carnival Week.    It happens every year and there's all kinds of fun things happening - a Parade with a Carnival Queen and her attendants, Beach contests, usually the Red Arrows air display, and fireworks at night.  I have friends who've holidayed there other years during this particular week and they say it's really great. Wish I was there too today instead of going to the Dentist!   ::) ;D ;D

Hi Joyce & Fudge,  Arrived home yesterday from a short break in Dorset including Lyme Regis, Dorchester and Weymouth, which we visited on Wednesday. Had a snack at the cafe you see on the webcam, enjoyed the carnival and amusements, too many to take in. The Red Arrows were late with their scheduled display, but suddenly came zooming overhead from the buildings behind us, truly amazing, about 30 mins of aerobatics. In the last few minutes heard there's been a crash in Bournemouth where they were heading next - waiting for more news. Such a tragedy if anyone's hurt. One of the pilots was a veteran from the Falklands.   :-\

Was in Ashton yesterday visiting family and the weather was awful. Worse still on the way home after tea. The M60 was awash and we literally crawled up the M61 on to the M6. Dried up near Preston and wasn`t too bad the rest of the way home, raining but not so hard. The winds have been the worst problem here in Preesall, but it`s much calmer today. Hope it improves a bit as we`re off to Devon a week on Friday for 2 weeks.

First Bus appeared to be running normally in Mossley on the 350 and 343 last night, certainly until around 9 pm and possibly later. The bus routes were all passable although a few car drivers were making heavy weather of it.

I was trying to get home yesterday at 3pm and waiting for a bus to oldham and three first buses passed me full of passengers but with private or not in service on them, eventually I got on a 180 and got off at the mecca and crossed over to get the 408. When it did come it was obviously not going to stop as it was in the outer lane so I walked into the middle of the road and was let on. The driver told me he was not supposed to be picking up so I was lucky he let me on but don't understand why they were doing this as was told the 409s hadnt been picking up either, suppose its health and safety !!!

Fudge -- You are complaining about the rain so what would you do if you had something like us in Australia. From 9am Monday until 9am Tues  (Today) we have had 155 mm (over 6 inches ) and quite a number of roads are flooded. Numerous towns in Queensland , New South Wales & Victoria have been flooded & thousands of people been evacuated to other places. Some towns are flooded to a depth 2 metres or even more. Glad to hear that you are both safe and not having to have evacuated. I wonder when it is all going to get back to normal? On the other hand, we could do with all you are getting here in the West. Take care both of you and your families.

Yep, it's a bit damp round their neck of the woods but at least the threat of a cyclone has reduced; the west coast of the North Island of NZ got clobbered by a weather event last weekend, millions of beercheques worth of damage but fortunately no fatalities.

Now, will the person or persons wot nicked off with NZ's summer please put it back  :-\

Re: the market webcam, can only find the marina cam on the council website ??.

Here (http://www.napier.govt.nz/index.php?pid=903) is a link to the Napier webcam just up the road from me, it's located in a perspex dome and rotates to give different views, will probably be dark for most of you given the time difference but there's some archived images on there as well.

Danny --Nice to hear from you, it seems such a long time. You can have all the water from this side of the Continent -- The Qld Gov were having a whinge about water shortage so the good Lord got a little cheesed off & gave them what they wanted & just a little more to keep them satisfied. Our regional Dams have been full for ages. We got plenty of rain but it clears away quite quickly from our land so we are lucky --Thank Goodness! The temp was still up in the 26 deg so it made it quite muggy--But I see to day you are enjoying a 37deg Celcius over there.  Plenty of cool drinks & not much work for you  ----Jayess

Hi
Thanks for your concern evryone but like Jayess we are well above in our house at least. Last year when we had the floods we were flooded in but were !5 feet above the water our street is like a W and we sit on the top of the middle bit weve had plenty of rain though its the wettest summer for 12 years that includes last years floods. Lots of other people haven't been so lucky New South Wales is copping it just now. When you get away from the coast in Aus the land is flat as a pancake once you get over the Great dividing range and it going to take a while for it to go down when you see it from the air all you see is water houses and trees as far as you can see. I thought Manchester was bad for rain till I came here it comes down in bucketfulls here There has been a few deaths mainly people in cars mostly four wheel drives trying to drive through flooded creeks they warn people all the time not to do it but they still do.   herby

Hi Herby
10,000 evacuated from Wagga Wagga New South Wales - Numurca Victoria 1/2 the residence left, hospital isolated or so the journo's say in the middle of the island. Q'land and the Gympie Mary River flooded. Here we are 'suffering humid 38C and low dams' - strange country Oz!. ha ha. Take Care and your families.

Hi Fudge, its lovely that you keep the meteorological status going for Ashton. Here in Perth Western Australia, we have just broken the 8th Heat Wave since last October. Thought we were going to shrivel this year, sat on 38-42C with lows only going down to low 30's. Just had the odd day when it dropped below 35 to probably 34C thus breaking each Heat Wave for a day or so!!!! We were in the midst of moving house in the middle of all the heat, tempers were short and dehydration always knocking you ha ha ha. Today is wonderful 29C with a very gentle breeze. Ah for a good nights sleep without fans and air con buzzing!!! Thank you Fudge.

Folks, When I was a young boy  in the(1930's)there used to be a toy shop in the market.and it was run by a young man of an effeminate nature I felt sorry for him at that time he was subjected to awful slurs,
In fact he lived near us on Wigmore St.. Does anyone else remember him? Of course there was the toy shop in   the avenue near the market that we placed our faces against to see fabulous Toy Trains etc, what memories. And who else was a train spotter at the junction  of the LMS and LNER lines just outside Stalybridge .?

The council web site (http://www.tameside.gov.uk/) is having a face lift

Why change something unless you are going to change it to something better?

It looks unpleasant to me, and why on earth does the site need re-branding? When I find a council website I want to know that I have reached that council's web site. With this new branding it is not immediately obvious that you have.

I rang the Council Offices today and asked why the new front page on the website doesn't give either a phone number (general enquiries) or address of the Council Offices. The chap I spoke to said that I should try "contacts". I informed him that "contacts" merely intoduced you to a long, rambling screen of council departments, sections within departments, council leaders, managers, supervisors, everybody and his dog and, no doubt eventually, the Town Hall cat. I suggested that all local authorities need to inform the rest of the world of where they are and how we make a simple phone call to them. He thought that this was "a good idea" and would talk to somebody about it. I had to make  a similar phone call a few years ago about the previous front page - the phone number and address were missing from that also. I thought these people were supposed to be bright.

He was only partly right. Yes, you do need to click on Contact Us, but then you need to ignore the entire page of contacts and click a link which says, perversely, "Directions to Tameside". There you will find the general phone number and the postal address. So it is pretty hit and miss whether someone visiting the web site will happen to find that.

And this is the web site for a place that most people in the country have either never heard of or think is something to do with the River Thames.
Title: Re: Market webcam back
Post by: GayJ on April 13, 2012, 12:18 AM
The thing I dislike about the page is its lack of functionality.  There is neither a breadcrumb trail (not a major sin, but a nuisance when you haven't got a button to click for homepage.  Not intuitive enough that you have to click the banner logo to bet back to the start. Wouldn't be so bad if the right-hand menu buttons stayed on the screen.

Think you need to have quite a bit of experience of using websites to get to find out the information you were seeking, which is not my experience of the general public who want to use council services.

May send them my feedback tomorrow.
Title: Re: Market webcam back
Post by: Too shy on April 13, 2012, 12:29 AM
What baffles me is why they have a 'Your feedback' button on the Home page, given that they seem to ignore any constructive criticism or ideas.

As Bill says, there is a "Your feedback" button. I went on it and left a message about there not being a readily apparent address and phone number on the front page - my belief being that you shouldn't have to go ferreting about in the bowels of the website to obtain basic information such as where these people are based and how I speak to them on the phone. I've been given a reference number so that I can "track" my message's progress (a bit like an item of luggage of ours that BA went and lost on the flight back from Delhi in 2004. We never saw that again either and BA blamed the airport authorities back in Delhi). I'll keep you posted about the progrees of this closer-to-home issue. Only five more working days to wait for a response. Exciting isn't it?

Well at least you can "Like" them on Facebook!

Well, of course, "Like" is one of the great misnomers on Facebook.

It is used on Pages to mean that you want to follow or subscribe to that Page, and be notified of things that are posted on that Page, whether you like the organisation behind the Page or not.

It is also used with individual posts to mean that you appreciate the posting of that message, whether or not you actually like whatever the message is about. F'rinstance this week on my Waterways Page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pennine-Waterways/183680467659) I posted the news that a boat had sunk in a canal lock in Ashton. Facebook now tells me that "2 people like this".

Post by: Too shy on April 13, 2012, 09:08 PM
Well, those nice people at the Council Offices got back to me today (their response was logged precisely at 11.16 hrs). They informed me that, "The Contact Us tab at the top of the page now directs to a page with the relevant contact information." Sure enough, it does now, but it certainly didn't do at this time yesterday. Incidentally, this is how the Greater Manchester local authorities shape up in whether or not you get direct contact information included clearly on the front page or whether or not you have to go searching for it.

The following give both location (address) and phone number (general enquiries) on the front page. In no particular order of efficiency, Salford, Wigan, Bolton, Oldham, Stockport and Trafford.

The following don't give the relevant information on the front page but at least give it via the "Contact Us" button. Manchester and Bury. However, it should be pointed out that in the case of Bury, although the address is readily available via the "Contact Us" button, it isn't so straightforward to get to the phone number. For some peculiar reason, you are asked to choose from one of six reasons why exactly you need to use the telephone number. I opted for "I want to speak to someone" (I thought I'd go for the simple approach to communication). This then led me to the "Contact Centre" where every telephone number in the western world seemed to be listed (I'm sure the Council Offices were in there somewher but my head was starting to hurt by now so I didn't push my luck).

Finally, we come to Tameside, the only local authority in Greater Manchester who were capable of devising a website front page with no obvious statement of where their headquarters was located or how to phone the general enquiries desk to ask them a simple question. Something to hide? Incompetence, maybe.

Hi Fudge,
The day was brilliant here in Perth WA for the ANZA parade. 40,000 turned out in Kings Park for the Dawn Service along with Dawn Services taking part all over Oz. It still brings a lump to the throat when you see the Old Diggers marching, being pushed in wheel chairs, zimmer frames and walking stick. They all walk proudly and we thank them for the job they did. Of course it is monumentous to see all the young men and women who gather and who have just returned from war torn areas. The oldest lady was a 94 year old nurse who was driven along, she had recently broken her leg. She wore the veil, all white uniform and red cardigan. She had so many memories to share. Just as if she had been doing her job yesterday. The Commonwealth Brigades which included my husbands old regiment marched and the Scotch bands played. Not seen so many pairs of Scotch Trews worn by some of the older members for a long time.

Been having a small celebration of our own - youngest granddaughter is 2 yrs old today.   :)
Our local street party was a big success yesterday, the weather stayed warm and fine until 7pm-ish when the heavens opened, but festivities carried on.  The gardens needed the rain badly again, so not all bad.  Temperature today 16C, had one heavy shower, but still very humid.
Shame Londoners were soaked today, such an effort on everyone's part, especially Her Majesty on her feet for so long.  As Fudge says, rain was a feature of Coronation Day, 1953.  Wonder if, next year, there'll be a recognition of 60 years since the Coronation.

We had some very unusual 'hail' here in the West of Australia last week. We have had 'some rain' at long last, not enough to fill our dams though for the oncoming hot summer. This weekend though has been bright, sunny, fauna and trees coming into bloom. The air is filled with the smell of Jasmin. (Not good for many with Hay-Fever!!) birds foraging. Still a slight breeze in the air. Spring is just around the corner now. Maybe a picnic B-B-Q by the river tomorrow.

I hope the weather remains pleasant for you for another couple of weeks at least, Fudge !!

Hi
I'm just about sick of sunny days it's 32 % today it was 35 the other day it hasn't rained for about six weeks now. I have half an acre and it cost too much to keep watering since the bloody government sold the water to private enterprise and the electricity. The tele keeps promising a thunderstorm  but all we get are a few dark clouds but not a drop of rain. Like the song says all that sunshine doesn't make the roses grow. You can have too much of a good thing.   herby

Hi Kiwi I did a lot of work at Robertsons and there used to be boxes full of the golliwogs playing all sorts of sports. I used to grab a handful when I was passing, I brought a few of them over here with me. I used to pin them on my golf bag but they didn't last long the other golfers used to swipe them I have three left I'm saving them for the grand kids The govermement stopped them from using them  something about being racist. What a load of balls       herby

Last Tuesday I raked up every leaf in my back yard and it looked lovely and neat and tidy.  Then high winds came and brought tons of neighbour's oak leaves down and blew them into piles against my steps and rocks.  Then it went from a sunny 14C Friday to -1C overnight and snowed, but melted by yesterday afternoon.  Went back to 0C overnight and it's been snowing since very early this morning and it still coming down.   About an inch so far.  I think winter has arrived!!   :( :'(

I can still recall those days going to work in the rotten snow & those frosty evenings when going to work at night. What a shame that you should be getting so much rain and especially for Christmas. I am sorry that my bottle of sun has not reached you yet!!
Here in the Hills of Perth Western Australia, we are having a Heat Wave, the last two days have been 41C and three before that around 37C Phew! I can tell you I am torn between being soaking wet and cold for an hour or so or suffering the air-con and fans. My poor Hibiscus tree out the front looks as though it has been through the mangle and come out scorched!!!
Just spoke with my friend in Devon and she is so fed up of the rain, wet and damp. I do hope that things look up for you soon and that the poor people who were flooded last week get a chance to dry out.

Don't worry about us Danny, we're a hardy race. Our forebears were trogging across these moorlands and bogtrotting when Adam was only a lad. It'll take more than a downpour to dampen (pardon the pun) our spirits. The sun'll be crackin' the flags this time next week.

Count me in too Dannyx6 when you say there's nothing like Lancashire folk (especially Ashtonians) for dry humour, wit, endless talent, being sharp as a tack, and having a wonderfully expressive local dialect.    It's fantastic, and never fails to amaze me.   Even people who don't really understand the meanings of some of the expressions never fail to get the gist and end up laughing their heads off.   Even when expressing the most sour of thoughts, they can make you laugh and everything feels better.
To all those here on Ashton forum who make life more bearable at times and contribute to these sentiments.....many, many thanks from me....Joyce    ;D

Well Fudge, I hope that you keep warm and cosy for Christmas. I note that Santa has just left the North Pole with his reindeer's and parcels!!!. The lights are shining all over Perth to welcome him. He is in for a hot delievery period. We have a nice forecast for tomorrow being around 31C, so will be eating Christmas Luncheon outside around the pool.  The children are all excited tonight and thankfully will fall asleep early.Tomorrow morning, early church service and then back home whilst the kids get stuck into their parcels. Later to be joined by friends for lunch. Been out in the heat today helping to put up decorations  and setting tables in the park where about 2000 homeless people will be treated to a lovely luncheon by the Salvation Army, 500 vollies turning out to serve lunch. Had more response for volunteers than needed. Anyway, have a lovely Christmas and hope that you will be sharing it with your family and friends.

Title: Re: Market webcam back

It's bad enough that we had another 6" of new snow, on top of everything we still have, in another bad storm last night, with many main roads having to be closed because of high winds causing whiteouts and accidents, and there's another blast set to come through tomorrow (Sunday) late afternoon and into the night......... but I can't imagine what those poor people who are having terrible floods in the UK are going through.   We've been shown photos and videos in news and on the internet - it must be devastating to know your home and vehicles are under all that water.   It will cost millions to even attempt to get back to anything like normal later on.
This winter seems to be creating havoc everywhere and in a Quebec town a home for seniors, many disabled, caught fire and has completely burned to the ground.   They know of 8 who lost their lives but another 30 are missing, and firefighters are having to hack through walls of ice a foot thick to try and find what they can.  Several people saw and heard one senior trapped on an outdooe balcony  but they couldn't save her in time.  It's absolutely dreadful what things happen.   Our temperatures have been frigid for a week or more and will likel last until at least next weekend, with day-time highs of about minus 8 to minus 16.  Tonight it's going down to minus 21 with a windchill making it feel like minus 30C,    I haven't been out anywhere for a couple of weeks now - getting a bit stir crazy!
Hope you are okay Fudge - stay out of the hail storms.  They can be nasty too.   :o

Post by: Martin on January 26, 2014, 01:45 AM
Oddly, we have had no snow yet this winter.

The place that has been cut off by floods for the last month is Muchelney, a name which means 'great island'. That was what it once was before the Somerset Levels were drained (like the Fens) and that is what it is again at the moment. The houses there are all on the 'island', an area of slightly higher ground, and so not flooded, although there were homes elsewhere that were flooded for a short time.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muchelney

It's been in the mid to high 30's here all week - gets a bit daunting during the night sometimes. Saw the shots of the Nursing Home, Joyce, the firefighters seemed to be having a very problamatic time. Poor souls trapped in those conditions. What a Topsy Turvy World we do live in !! It's Australia Day here, so will be many BBQ's and Picnics throughout the day. These will be followed by a Fireworks Display once the sun has gone down.

Some of the photos taken of floods in the UK have been shown on our TV news and it must be devastating to everyone affected.   Other than perhaps fire, I can't think of anything worse than  having water invade your home.
It's bad enough when our snow (which is now piled approx. 6 and up to 10 ft. high in some areas with every day only having highs of about minus 6 to minus 10) just keeps on accumulating and it kind of scares me where it's all going to go when and if ever it melts.   Good luck and my sympathy to everyone with flooding problems in the UK.   :(

Your terrible UK weather and flooding has been shown on our TV newscasts (Birmingham yesterday and other areas before) and even though we're still having tremendously frigid cold and more snow, having water come into your home would be horrific.  My heart goes out to all involved and hope that something can be done to help them, although I also see a lot of people are angry that something wasn't done to prevent some of the flooding from rivers.

Last night the temp. went down here to minus 27C and the windchill at 5a.m. this morning felt as though it was minus 35C.   It was sunny with a blue sky most of the day but still very cold with the high only reaching minus 11C and the road on my street is hard-packed white snow.   Even the City hasn't bothered to come and put either salt or sand down to prevent skidding.     Sudden whiteouts from snowsqualls created havoc on several main highways in Southern Ontario yesterday - one of the pileups had 96 vehicles involved, and two others had 30 each so that no traffic was moving for several hours.   Complete chaos.  I sure hope Spring begins to arrive soon.   :)

Post by: Son of Nomad on November 08, 2014, 12:33 PM
There seemed to be far fewer fireworks being let off round my way this 5th November which was a relief as our Cairn terrier goes ballistic at the slightest bang. We dread this time of year (and New Years Day) and normally have to shut him in the kitchen to let him bark himself silly. I hope the tradition is not dying out but every year there are stories in the media about children being involved in accidents and I fear that some day a 'Nanny State' official will try to call a halt to it. Perish the thought.

How much snow did you get, KennethO?   We got 21cm with wind gusts up to 40km/h and -17C temperature, and Hamilton got 40cm in one day!   The Maritime Provinces are in a real mess - Saint John, New Brunswick,  has declared a state of emergency.  Poor souls.  They've had 100cm in three days and loads more to come with freezing rain mixed in.  Heaven help them.     Joyce

I don`t know how it`s managed to win. I was born and bred in Ashton and moved 4 years ago but have visited family there on many occasions, the last time being just before Christmas, Couldn`t believe how much it has gone downhill in recent years. The market ground was half empty, litter everywhere and a general feeling of neglect. Don`t get me wrong. I love Ashton and always will, but I`d never think of moving back now the way it is.

When we were Kids, during the war, it was a treat during the School Holidays to be taken up to the market on Tuesdays. You could spend the whole afternoon walking around the stalls and listening to the quack doctors and the sellers of fabulous articles (I only found out later that fabulous is related to fable, a tale not to be believed!). then there were the pottery mock auctions. This chap used to Dutch Auction (start at the top price and go down) off such things as dinner sets missing one plate or a cherry boy dresser ornament missing a hand. If he didn't get the lowest price he wanted he would just let the object drop onto those big millstone set which the market was paved with and smashed it. Very exciting! What I found out later that he bought the stuff from the potteries for 'grog' prices, that is the price of scrap pottery which was added to the new stuff, what he took back he received the 'grog' price again for it. Yes, you didn't need to spend a single penny for a great afternoon's entertainment. That is unless you could wheedle a ha'penny ice cream from you Mam from Siddal's or Howard's or Talco's. Those were the days! Stay well.  Ayess.

When I lived in Ashton there was a stall in the covered market where you could buy hot drinks like Vimto and Horlicks. It was called Nadins and you just stood at the counter to drink. I don't suppose there is a similar stall there now... or is there? It seems a bit primative now but when you are a child it was something to look forward to.

Hope you soon get lovely warm sunshine, Fudge.   I'm fed up with having to stay home and inside because of more and more snow and the coldest Feb. for years - set 5 record lows here in London with several day-time highs of -23C feeling more like -35C!   Haven't been out to shop since Jan. 28th - but will have to get out soon because I'm getting pretty low on some food.  They say we won't likely get relief before April!   Don't know where all the snow will melt to!   :o  The sun is shining today but it's only -7C.    ;D

Well here on the Fylde Coast we've only had one light dusting of snow all winter and that melted a couple of hours later. I believe it is due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream that the Fylde has it's own microclimate. In a way I'm sorry because I like to get out with my camera to photograph snowy scenes but I'm sure if I lived in Joyce_In_Canada's neck of the woods I would be heartily sick of snow. Anyway as Fudge says, Spring is on its way and there are certainly signs of that here now.

Hi Fudge!   Sorry you're having such awful weather - it's the same here!  This is supposed to be lovely, sunny June and yet all we've had is heavy rain, thunderstorms, high winds (enough to take the whole roof off a three-storey apartment building), a tornado watch and when the temperature did rise, it was so humid you felt as though you were in a sauna and could barely breathe!
Ruined all my beautiful peonies smashing them to the ground, and the forecast isn't all that great for the next while either.  Pretty depressing when you want lovely sunshine!    :D

I managed to clear out a bunged up gutter in the early afternoon, Fudge. I was covered in muck by about 3-00 pm and decided to call it quits. It started drizzling with rain soon after - good timing?

I know how you feel, Fudge!   We also had our first snow at 10a.m. this morning, but thankfully it changed to rain about an hour later.   It's pretty cold now -  about 1c - but after we've had such lovely warm and sunny days for a while the snow was inevitable.  I only hope there's no snow on Dec. 9th when I have to go for my Senior's Group Education Session so they'll renew my Driver's Licence if I pass their written tests.  Compulsory every two years once you reach 80.   Without my car I'd be really done in.  A little snow is nice to make it look "Christmassy" on the 25th, but I can do without it for the rest of the winter!   ;D
Hope it's not too bad for you and you can get around okay.  Joyce   :)

Wishing a Very Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year to everyone who visits and posts on Ashton, not forgetting yourself, Martin, who so very generously keep us all in touch.    I hope it continues for a very long time into the future.   Seemingly the only stable thing in such a topsy-turvy world these days.   Joyce   :) :) :)

Hi Fudge....We heard of and saw pictures of the floods in York over here on the news - terrible.
Even though I don't like it one bit, I guess our present grey skies and steady snow with lots of wind and squalls are better than flooding.   The news just predicted more current and overnight snow  (could be about 6" overnight) and tomorow morning the temperature with the wind chill will feel like minus 20 to minus 22C.   That's a big change and drop from our week leading up to Christmas!   :o    Think I'll stay home because I don't think there's going to be much sun until maybe Tuesday.     Hope your weather improves and you get to see some sunshine.   :)   Happy New Year....Joyce

Would love just a little more warmth here!   We've just had about 8" of snow and the temp. is about minus 6C with a very strong wind, although during the night it was minus 15C.  Not a day you want to venture outside unless you've got lots of warm clothes on and winter boots!    ;)
Hope you aren't baking any cupcakes in your vehicle, Maureen!   ;D ;D ;D

P.S.   Was off air for a while - my computer froze but now fixed and they've put me on Firefox, so now I can see all your lovely videos again, Vanessa.   Going to go back and search for several I haven't been able to see for some time before Firefox.  Lovely.   ;D

I can't find the news report that gave the name, but I think it must be that stretch of water below Walkerwood reservoir.

I can't picture that a dam would have burst. I would imagine that it would probably have been a culvert (some form of man-made construction) along that length of water, which overflowed because it was unable to take the sheer volume of water which was coming down off the moors. The culvert at Micklehurst Road, Mossley, directly opposite the old Butcher's Arms pub (went on to become the Top House pub and now converted into residential use) had taken quite a hamering and, the following day, looked like a disaster area with debris everywhere. I tried to elicit a response from United Utilities (formerly North West Water) and they were somewhat "vague" so I felt obliged to leave it at that.

Hi Fudge - I'm hoping the warmer weather will soon stay for us and perhaps cure all the illness which has been, and still is, going around here for ages.   Today's high has only been 0c.
Add to that I've had a really long spell of first walking pneumonia;  thought I was getting better and then came down again from Jan. 28th to a week or so ago with pneumonia and bronchitis.  Never had anything like this before and it's really played havoc with me - especially my reaction to the antibiotic.  Still not up to par yet, so keeping my fingers crossed for better days ahead.   Being under the weather isn't so great when you're alone - but my two neighbours were wonderful.
I have been having a look on here lately though, so keep up the good work folks.   Joyce

Hi Fudge - we also had the strangest Spring weather - rained heavily almost every day, and now the Summer is tremendously hot and humid with lots of dull, dark days... at least in my neck of the woods.  They predict thunderstorms locally but we only get a few drops of rain you can actually count, then it's so hot and humid you can't go outside because it feels you can't breathe.  The flowers are struggling to bloom unless you hand-water them often but the weeds are growing like crazy.  Then suddenly it all changes and the sky goes black and some people nearby have even had tornados touch down causing much destruction..   Allergies are rampant and it seems everyone is using nose sprays for sneezing bouts.  The next week or so is supposed to be a little cooler and sunny, so here's keeping my fingers crossed so I can get out and about a little.    Joyce
