The thing is, when you are used to seeing stars on television and in films, and they seem to have been entertaining us forever, we forget that they are only human like us, and it comes as quite a shock to hear that they have passed away.

Which one was Mr. Lucas? I thought he was already old all those years ago. Loved the programme and John Inman was great Joseph. Miss the comedies from the seventies. They just don't make me laugh todays supposedly comedies and the more outragious the less funny.

To Lydia and Joe

Mr Lucas played by Trevor Bannister, was Mr Humphries 'side-kick', and is now 63. He has also starred in 'Coronation St', 'Keeping up Appearances' and 'The Avengers'.

John Inman was born in Preston in 1935. Made his stage debut on Blackpool's South Pier when he was only 13.

To Joseph

The sequel was 'Grace and Favour', which ran from 1992-1993 for two series (12 episodes in all). The manor house, Millstone Manor',  was bought by young Mr Grace with their pension fund, leaving them all no alternative but to run the estate. Denise  8)

Lydia - don't know if you remember the mid seventies comedy series "I didnt know you cared" based on the Peter Tinniswood books.  We bought the first series on a DVD for only £4.99 (total of 7 episodes) and it was even funnier than we remembered!  Now I know I won't be disappointed I shall be ordering the remaining ones.

The TV chef Keith Floyd died yesterday, too, from a heart attack. He was 65.

If anyone has time to watch it, there is one of the classic Ealing comedies on C4 at 1.50pm today - 'The Titfield Thunderbolt' starring Stanley Holloway.  8)

I probably first saw Patrick Swayze in North and South but has anyone seen him in "To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar"   I joked to a friend that it was so unfair that he was good looking as a man but equally good looking as a female in that film (which is an old favourite of mine by the way)

Patrick Swayze's not dead, he's in rehearsals for Ghost 2, anyhoo I'd heard Patrick Swayze's family are most upset, they had booked Keith Floyd to do the catering and the deposit was non returnable.

RIP Edward , I remember him most in Callan , remember the swinging light bulb at the beginning of each episode ,the black leather gloves and his side kick who stunk to high heaven . I think Callan was iconic , he was an anti hero type , always alone and on the verge of going crazy,Didn,t he also have some songs released? Perhaps I,m wrong but I think he recorded Macarthar Park years ago ?

Lovely fellow.
I have him on the EE episodes.
I remember watching him and thinking, what a terrible actor they've dug up for this character.
Once the plot unfolded it made sense and you saw what a brilliant performance it was.
Any one remember Patrick, (Rudolph Walker) in 10 Rillington Place?

Another classic,Ian. Rudolph Walker played the chap who moved into Christie's empty house and found the walled-up bodies of his victims. All the more horrific because it was all true!
Rudolph also in 'Love Thy Neighbour', of course. Denise

The new language includes a 'big ask' (Celtic for SPL champions next year - heard on the telly tonight - don't mention it to Jack), going forward, headcount, footfall, touching base (gerroff), for free, solutions (used to be products), meet with, head up, drilled it into the net (scored) and many more.

Post by: Kiwi on May 05, 2010, 03:23 AM
I don't have a real issue with this "new speak" Bill, I think we need to hit the ground running, keep our eye on the ball, and make sure that we are singing off the same song sheet. At the end of the day it is not a level playing field and the goal posts may move, if they do, someone else may have to pick it up and run with it. We therefore must have a golf bag of options hot-to-trot from the get-go. It is your train set but we cannot afford to leave it on the back burner; we've got a lot of irons in the fire, right now.

We will need to un-stick a few potential poo traps but it all depends on the flash-to-bang time and fudge factor allowed. Things may end up slipping to the left and, if they do, we will need to run a tight ship. I don't want to re-invent the wheel but we must get right into the weeds on this one. If push comes to shove, we may have to up stumps and then we'll be in a whole new ball game.

I suggest we test the water with a few warmers in the bank. If we can produce the goods then we are cooking with gas, if not, then we are in a world of hurt. I don't want to die in a ditch over it but we could easily end up in a flat spin if people start getting twitchy. To that end, I want to get round the bazaars and make sure the movers and the shakers are on-side from day one. If you can hit me with your shopping list I can take it to the head honchos and start the ball rolling.

There is light at the end of the tunnel and I think we have backed a winner here. If it gets blown out the water, however, I will be throwing a track. So get your feet into my in-tray and give me chapter and verse as to how you see things panning out. As long as our ducks are in a row I think the ball will stay in play and we can come up smelling of roses.

Before you bomb burst and throw smoke, it is imperative we nail our colours very firmly on the mast and look at the big picture. We've got to march to the beat of the drum. We are on a sticky wicket so we'll need to play with a straight bat and watch out for fast balls.

I've been on permanent send for long enough and I've had my ten pence worth. I don't want to rock the boat or teach anyone to suck eggs. We must keep this firmly in our sight picture or it will fall between the cracks. If the cap fits, wear it, but it may seem like pushing fog up a hill with a sharp stick. Geddit ? Gottit? Good, get on with it  :D

Nat Lofthouse used to do an 8 hour shift down the pit during world War 2 catching the 3.30am tram. After work he'd be met by the Bolton coach and taken to Burden Park to play 90 mins for Bolton Wanderers. Can you imagine Beckham, Gerrard or Tevez doing that?
A wonderful quote from Lofthouse:
"There were plenty of fellers who'd kick your b......ks off. The difference was that, at the end of the game, they'd shake yer hand and help you look for them!"

I thought I’d just mention the passing of Jerry Leiber (1933-2011). Not exactly a performing star but certainly revered among early rock and pop aficionados. He was one half of the Leiber and Stoller song-writing partnership that produced many memorable early hits for Elvis Presley, The Coasters and others. Songs like ‘Hound Dog’ helped to shake up the sleepy musical scene in 1950s Britain never to be the same again - thank goodness. RIP Jerry.

Apparently not Fudge.
I used to smoke and drink a very lot in my 20's, So I know about addiction.
I know from personal experience, that there is life after addiction. I know when you are in the middle of it, you cannot see a way out.
I'm glad I found a way out of that cycle.
Sadly that binge culture still persists today. I shudder at some of the Facebook postings some of our relatives, including girls,  hoping to get 'wasted' on a weekend, otherwise they would deem it not to have been a good one. The 'binge' culture still persists.

It's always a tragedy when something like this happens. probably an accident but still a loss nevertheless.

The trouble, in most cases, is that most folk think that it's something that happens to other people.

Sadly I watched what addiction to prescription drugs did to my mother in the 60s and 70s.  A most intelligent, attractive and talented lady, but with a destructive personality.  She could charm repeat prescription after repeat prescription out of our family doctor for years.  These were heavy duty drugs at this time, barbiturates, amphetamines and various diazepams.  Same sort of cocktail taken by Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland.  There was absolutely nothing her family could do to avoid her ultimate destruction and suicide.  How much easier for these stars who had access to a variety of noxious substances.  So many lives cut short.

Hi All, R.I.P. Eric. I have to admit to being a BIG fan of  1950's and 1960's comedies. I have a collection of DVD's (which I bought, unusual for me) with all the Carry on's, and that type of thing. There is a part near the end of a Doccie, (about why we love the Carry on Films) where someones describes the Carry On series as ( I am paraphrasing here) "People who never were, in a Country that never was" I think it is a Beautiful Epitaph of the series. In my Humble (who am I kidding here!!!) Opinion, could never be recreated.

He moved his loyalties to The March Hare on Crowhill when his son became the landlord, now his son has an inoperable brain tumour. I used to see him a lot in Asda, he was always very cheerful.

Don't know if you saw 'Goodbye BBC Television Centre', on for over 2 hours, and I watched every nostalgic minute.

Nothing in the water in Ashton. It's just that Ashtonians were always known for their anti establishment stance with regard to Government.  You only have to study local history and the struggle for reform and emancipation  Lots of people still living here still hold those views because we are still living with enforced Government legislation. I do teach about social and local history and the various steps slowly gained throughout the 19th and early 20th century and most advances were eventually gained through protest. Even local millowners didn't have a vote until 1832 and they filled in petitions etc.  Without these advances we would still be ruled by the Landed Gentry in the Rotten Boroughs.  Many of us still feel that lots of these gains are being eroded.

People who have left these shores, even though at one time they wanted to leave, still have a rosy nostalgia for the old town, but this town has changed beyond all imagination.  You will see all these changes in the videos kindly posted by Vanessa and Chris. We love this place warts and all.

Bryan Forbes CBE, film actor, film writer and film director, died on 8th May. I always remembered him as the director of the Lancashire-located film,"Whistle Down the Wind" but I have now stumbled across the fact that he was the director of "The Stepford Wives." He regularly popped up in early 1960's British black and white creations, Colditz being a good example.

To be honest, Kenneth, I thought Bert's death had gone unnoticed on here then I spotted your posting today. As for your observation of "One of the best goalkeepers ever," although that's a rather grand comment to make, I think in Bert's case it probably would be quite true. He was world class, and there can be no doubt about that and, if he were playing today, very few clubs could meet the asking price for his services. I saw him countless times at the old Maine Road ground and what an idol he was to us City diehards. He was one of the most charismatic players you were likely to see in your lifetime and his athletic and acrobatic style was only matched by his heroics - he would put his head into situations where the majority of outfield players would be even reluctant to put their boots. God bless him.

PS If you want to read a good obituary on Bert, check out the Independant website for (abt) 17th July.

I remember watching him on TW3 back in 1963 - it really was a ground-breaking show - the way they poked fun at lazy, stuffy politicians as well as highlighting injustices and anomalies in the 'establishment'. Together with many other wonderful talented people on that show, he was a true original.

Peter O'Toole, survived by an indestructible liver and three children. Allegedly he went out boozing with Michael Caine when he was O'Toole's understudy for 'The Long And The Short And The Tall' at the Royal Court Theatre in 1959. The last thing Michael Caine remembered was eating egg and chips, before waking up in a strange flat with a headache. "What time is it?" he inquired. "Never mind what time it is," said O'Toole. "What f***ing day is it?" Two days had passed and they were due on stage in three hours.

Cast your mind back, boys and girls. It's Friday night, 29th March 1962 and you're at the Odeon Cinema on Oxford Street in Manchester. You and your chums are here with about two thousand others to see an American "package tour" show. This one you've waited patiently for for weeks - "The Brenda Lee Show" with supporting acts from Mike Berry and the Outlaws and Sounds Incorporated. Additional guests on this tour are Don and Phil Everly and, before the final curtain comes down, a surprise guest on the night makes his entry from the rear of the stalls. Singing all the way down the aisle and just about audible over a complete cacophony of noise, the man himself, Little Richard. By the time he arrived on stage he had thrown both his jacket and shirt into the audience and had to dash into the wings for replacements. Everyone went home more than happy I can assure you. Very happy memories of more than fifty years ago.

Today (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_the_Music_Died) is the anniversary of the day the music died  :'(

I still remember that day so well. My parents used to have the Daily Mirror delivered each morning and I read the front page headline with complete shock and disbelief 'Rock Stars Die In Crash'. Me and my friends were huge Buddy Holly fans well before the crash and recognised his great musical ability and exciting sound before he became the household name he is today. In my opinion, Buddy was one of the two fathers of British rock music because his influence was massive, especially after his March 1958 tour of England.
In 1961 I joined the 'Buddy Holly Appreciation Society' which was run by a fan called Johnny Beecher in the south of England. I still have the badge I received on joining and a picture of it is below.

Anthony Wedgwood Benn died today aged 88. A political maverick in his day, a man of the people who wasn't blind to the brain-washing that goes on. Rest in peace, Tony

It was announced last week that Lance Percival had died at the age of 81. Not sure if you long standing expats will recognise his name but he was quite prominent in the surge of satirical programmes we were exposed to on TV in the 1960s. In such shows as "That Was The Week That Was" he appeared with the likes of David Frost, Roy Kinnear, William Rushton and Millicent Martin. A clever man, you could almost describe him as an allrounder; he made humorous records which entered the pop charts, acted in Carry On films and provided voiceovers for a variety of productions. Not many of these "True Brit" entertainers seem to be around these day - although Doddy is still going strong.

In the early 1970s I needed to visit her on business but unfortunately only saw her father. I remember him as being a pleasant chap who helped me to conclude our business. At that time she lived along a country lane between Royton and Chadderton.

Hi All, I am sometimes, behind the times. I was reading a February edition of uncut magazine, and was saddened to read the passing of Jimmy Ruffin and Cherry Wainer. Jimmy sang What becomes of the broken-hearted, amonst others, and Cherry wainer (Cape Town lass) was the organist with the Lord Rockingham's eleven.  So sad. also, one of my hero's, Percy Sledge.

Just a thought.........

Daftjack.

James Bond actor Clifton James dies aged 96

Sherriff J.W.Pepper Louisiana State Po-lice (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/clifton-james-died-sheriff-pepper-james-bond-films-dies-a7685701.html)

State Trooper: That look like a boat stuck in the Sheriff's car there, Eddie?
Eddie: Boy, where you been all your life? That there's one of them new car-boats.
Sheriff J.W. Pepper: By the powers invested in me by this parish, I hereby do commandeer this vehicle and all those persons within. [spits and looks at Eddie] And that means you, smartass.

They don't write dialogue like that anymore.

Bloody Legend.....
James is a decorated World War II veteran, U.S. Army Combat Infantry Platoon Sergeant Co. "A" 163rd Inf., 41st Div. He served forty-two months in the South Pacific, from January 1942 until August 1945. He spent time in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. John Noakes RIP.  :'( Blue Peter was my all time favourite telly show as a kid and some of his antics were incredible, he held the highest free-fall record by a civilian for yonks, climbed Nelson's Column without any elf'n safety gear, a true action man. Shame his memory got a bit wonky in later life but he left a few good ones for a generation or two.

For me the funniest situation was when a zookeeper brought a baby elephant into the Blue Peter studio. It pee'd on the floor and then pulled the keeper into the (presumably) smelly pool. He then slipped and sat right in it. John Noakes was hysterical until he  realised that was perhaps not the thing to do and offered to help. It's a shame he was suffering from Alzheimers but he will long be remembered by viewers of a certain age.
